Can oval braided rugs be cool?

I'm not sure why, but I've recently become interested in oval braided rugs. We had them in our house growing up, but that was 1980. I guess I'm looking for something a little interesting, but I also don't want to 'countrify' our house. This is an example of what I've been looking at:

We'd have one in front of the sofa and a larger one under the dining table (since they're in the same room).

To give you an idea of the furniture, this is the chair we have:

And this is the style of couch I'm considering (perhaps in a dark green color, but that's TBD).

What do you think? Will that rug look okay in front of those? Otherwise, I was thinking about an old standby from Pottery Barn. I'm planning on painting the walls a very light brown color.

  1. I think they can! With your modern-ish setting and furniture I think it would look eclectic and cool :-)

  2. Yes, braided rugs can be cool. We also had them growing up.

I think they'd look great with your furniture!

  3. I agree. Mixing eras, pieces, textures and colors is to me, what makes rooms work. Don't you have exposed brick, too?

  4. I love the chair and the sofa that you're looking to buy. Definitely go with the branded rug, it's unique and nostalgic :) Perfect!

  6. Thanks everyone! Whew! I was afraid you'd all think I was decorating my country cabin or something!

Caryn - yes, we have exposed brick.

Rhea - Thanks for the tip on PB. I'll check it out!

  7. If that rug were a Rorschach test then I have failed very badly. I can't help but think of an artistic woven vagina we had at the Historical Society in Buffalo.

In other words, I like it very much.

  9. I like the rugs! I actually have a small one by my front door that I love. It's black and tan because I had the same concern, but now that I know I like them, I wouldn't be afraid of color. It's very durable. We had them growing up too, and I think they can pick up the style of the rest of the room. If you want them to look country, put country stuff with it, if you want them to look pottery barn, put pottery barn style with it.

My vote - go for it!
